Program Information
At First Steps Academy, our programs are thoughtfully designed to nurture the whole child—socially, emotionally, and academically. Using Montessori-inspired guidance, we create hands-on learning environments that encourage independence, curiosity, and self-paced exploration. Our curriculum aligns with the Iowa State Early Learning Standards to ensure children meet key developmental milestones while building a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Equally important, we integrate Conscious Discipline and gentle redirection strategies into our daily routines, helping children learn to identify their emotions, practice self-regulation, and develop empathy for others. This approach not only fosters cognitive growth but also equips children with essential life skills to thrive in school and beyond.
Infant Program
Our infant environment will be designed to feel like an extension of home, providing warmth, comfort, and security during these foundational months. Following Montessori principles, infants are given opportunities for safe exploration and sensory experiences that encourage natural curiosity and early motor development. Care routines—feeding, diapering, and sleeping—are approached as moments for connection and trust-building. Using the Iowa State Early Learning Standards, we focus on nurturing secure attachments, language emergence, and early physical milestones. Conscious Discipline helps caregivers model calm responses, while gentle redirection fosters emotional security and early social awareness.
Toddler Program
Toddlers are eager to explore and test their independence. In our classroom, child-sized materials and practical life activities allow children to practice self-help skills and develop confidence. Our Montessori-style approach encourages choice and hands-on learning, from pouring water to sorting colors. We integrate the Iowa State Early Learning Standards to guide development in early language, social interaction, and problem-solving. Through Conscious Discipline, teachers help toddlers identify big emotions, redirect behavior constructively, and encourage positive peer interactions, laying the groundwork for self-regulation and cooperative play.
Wrap-Around Care
Our Preschool and TK program wrap around care will help bridge the gap between preschool and elementary school, offering an enriched learning environment that challenges and supports children as they prepare for formal schooling. Rooted in Montessori principles, we encourage children to take ownership of their learning, fostering concentration, responsibility, and leadership. The Iowa State Early Learning Standards guide our focus on advanced pre-literacy, math readiness, and collaborative projects. Through Conscious Discipline and positive redirection, children practice emotional regulation, problem-solving, and empathy—skills that set them up for success in kindergarten and beyond.
After-School Program
Our after-school care provides a safe, welcoming space for older children to unwind, connect, and continue growing beyond the classroom. We balance homework support with engaging activities that encourage creativity, teamwork, and responsibility—drawing inspiration from Montessori principles of independence and respect. While the Iowa State Learning Standards guide academic enrichment, Conscious Discipline strategies help children manage stress, navigate peer relationships, and practice mindful decision-making in a supportive community environment.
